"Nhamo has you niece managed to track down the two people who attacked you?"
"Not yet. She wasn't home Sunday night. What day is it today?"
"It's Monday you drunk."
Mr Fear and Nhamo sat in the warehouse conversing as the brainwashed humans worked on creating a circular contraption that had lasers embedded into it.
"So this portal of yours. You sure it will work?" Nhamo asked doubting the who design.
"Yes it will work. I just need to find a power source that can produce hundreds of thousand of volts for ten minutes and a good astrophysicist to calculate the exact time so that I don't end up in on the wrong planet."
Nhamo shook his head knowing that he was betting a life in jail for something that he had never seen work. Mr Fear was just too confident in his planning and executions.
"Nhamo. Get me a transformer please. Several if you may. Also tell your goons I know a way to get them rich quicker."
Nhamo smiled and shook his head, "Define several transformers?"
"Any number above five will be enough. They have to be step up transformers. Check on your niece too. I need an astrophysicist."
Nhamo left the warehouse and smiled at how the abandoned industrial area had become greener. The world that depended on cleaner energy might not have a very powerful source of electricity. Ending up on the wrong planet wasn't his plan at all. He wanted to start afresh from a world that didn't know his sins. A fresh start was what motivated him to partake into the grand scheme of a creature he didn't know where it came from.
Panashe was enjoying the lectures in the morning and even participating but something kept distracting him. Allen wasn't in class. Even though he didn't really care about what most of his classmates did it was just one question that he wanted to ask. 'Who is Melli?' he asked himself. He knew he had heard that name somewhere else but couldn't even remember. 'Was it a dream?'.
He tortured himself trying to remember but let it go. When classes were over he decided to remain behind and study.
"You see. I told you we would find him." Xolani told one of the recruits who hadn't introduced herself to Panashe.
"Hey wanna hang out for a while. I am Chipo by the way.", she said as she extended her hand for a handshake.
"Wait a minute. We all attend this school." Panashe was confused.
"Not all of us. Zviko goes to the school of art several blocks away. As for us. Yeah we will be with you all semester long." Xolani replied.
The trio went to the diner and proceeded to its rooftop. They were sitting there enjoying stories both true and lies. Panashe felt relaxed as he enjoyed the moment without worrying about anything. That's when the door that led inside crashed open and Tapiwa was being scolded by Zviko. She was complaining about him going fast for some reason.
"Tapiwa has a car?" Panashe asked Xolani who shook his head.
"Not a car but a bike. A dangerously fast motorbike. I heard that Munashe found him beating some guy who had cheated him in a race. That cap wearing freak has some serious issues I tell you." Xolani said.
"Hey Xolani. Chipo. Panashe." Tapiwa greeted the crew trying to avoid what Zviko was saying.
The small team enjoyed their time on the rooftop until it was late.
They went back into the diner and Munashe was waiting for them.
"Okay brats. I think it's about time you understood what you do. Your VCBs aren't just manuals okay. You can find jobs there from the black market and the more jobs you do the more money you make. Jobs differ but they will be labeled if they can be done by an individual or team. When you complete a job your money will be delivered after the client confirms job well done. For today there won't be anything we can do until I contact you. Now go home." Munashe wasn't a good user of nice words.
Nhamo ran from rooftop to rooftop as he approached his niece's apartment. He never knocked.
"Mellisa, where you at little girl?" he checked from room to room until he walked into the bathroom. The blood soaked towels gave him a slight fear until he saw her sitting in the shower with her headphones pressing down her ears. She looked sad and Nhamo stood there without disturbing her. He knew that the world he had introduced to her when her parents died was a horrible one but they had no choice. All the other relatives had refused to take her in.
"Uncle Nhamo. How are you?" she finally stood up her nightdress looking way too long for her small body. "Hey child. Another bad job?"
"Yes. A predator anomaly this time. We couldn't even scratch it but it had a nice time beating us. Oh yeah, the UAEC came in looking for you."
"Don't worry I will deal with them when the time comes. I need you to find out about these two men."
Two pictures were projected from his phone into the air.
"Munashe. The current leader of Dzimba Dzemabwe and the other one is a friend of Allen."
"Where can I find them?"
"Munashe and his fiancé own a diner close to the college I attend and let me check on Panashe."
She took her phone and called Allen who told her everything about Panashe that were asked.
"Panashe lives in the slums to the south of Mbare. In a nice flat for such a place anyways. Here is his address." she sent him a map file and sat down.
"Can you find locations of step up transformers for me?"
"Okay uncle this is getting weird. What do you need Panashe and the transformers for? You haven't told me what job you are doing but expect me to find engineers and scientists for you."
"Panashe is a witness and I think he is trying to find us. Same goes for Munashe. As for the job, we are going to build a huge machine that will put us on the map."
"That counts for nothing. Tell me exactly what's going on uncle."
"Not yet Mellisa. Also find the best astrophysicist in the south. Will be back for the information by four a.m."
Nhamo left his niece to get the information he needed as he went for a hunt himself.
Panashe had already arrived home and once again Ruvarashe had given him food. He had fell asleep on the couch when the clicking sounds from the door woke him up. It was an electric door and damaging the control panel would open the door but also sound the alarm. He prepared his gear and forced the VCB onto his wrist.
When the door slid open two men walked into the apartment and one other remained on the door. Panashe had managed to send a warning to Munashe through the VCB. He had left his gear on the table for strategic reasons had managed to hide behind the couch.
"There is no one here." one of the man said before looking at the gear. "This is..." he didn't finish his state before signalling his accomplice to check behind the couch.
"Got you." the accomplice said as he dragged Panashe out. "To think Nhamo had any problems with you. Should we kill him?"
The other nodded but Panashe wasn't planning on dying so he kicked the man who was holding him sending him backward and shouting, "activate combat mode!"
His gear hissed on the table which managed to distract the man who had figured out his hiding place. Panashe used the couch to help him leap up high as he sent a kick that took the intruder by his neck and sent him crushing into the wall.
As he landed he pointed on the man who was by the door and the two mechanical limbs propelled forward and knocked the man into the wall behind him. He went forward and drop kicked the man he had kicked first.
When all the intruders were down Panashe picked up his mask and connected his gear to the VCB using a thin data cable. The mechanical limbs were being dragged behind him as he ran out of the apartment building and ran towards the city centre.
Munashe stared at the message from Panashe but knew it was too late for him to go there. A few moments later another message came in. 'I am on my way to the diner.' Munashe smiled as he headed down into the diner. There were several men sitting in the diner and Nhamo was at the counter.
"Hello Munashe. I was gonna come upstairs when my men kill the brat you were with that other day. You see, I can't kill you until the kid dies. Then you. Then the UAEC. And everything goes back into quietness."
"Nhamo. Before you kill me I just want to ask one last thing. Who are you working for?"
"Oh man, you are going to laugh about this Munashe. It's an anomaly that used to be in your containers."
"What does he want?"
"I am done speaking to you Munashe. Kill him."
Munashe started to attack the men in the diner. One by one they fell to his punches but the noise didn't go unnoticed. Munashe knew that it was going to be impossible to handle all of them at once now that some of them recovered.
"You lack experience in fighting alone friend." Nhamo smirked before picking his rod.
"Get the hell out of my diner." Ruvarashe walked into the diner wearing braces that had a canister on the top side. She stretched out her arms and opened her arms.
Flames gushed out of the small tubes on her braces and everyone who wasn't caught up in the flames received a beating from the couple. Nhamo immediately retreated and called back his men as they fled.
"Wow. I didn't know you were this prepared for an attack." Nhamo was shocked because he didn't know about the foundation that much.
I don't know why you are running away. You seemed pretty confident of your skills." Munashe taunted but Nhamo didn't fall for it.
The hissing mech arm flew past Munashe and Ruvarashe and went straight for Nhamo's face and sent him flying back. Nhamo threw a small cylindrical object from his pocket and a gas started obstructing the view.
After the gas had dispersed Nhamo was gone. Ruvarashe went straight for Panashe and hugged him. "Are you okay sweetie?" she asked and Panashe didn't answer. His breathing was hard and fast.
"Munashe, what do we do now?" Ruvarashe asked as she kept Panashe close to him.
"I was ignorant of the fact that Nhamo was capable of killing us. From now on Panashe sleeps here." Munashe was agitated and he looked at Panashe.
"We are going to need drones. And a lot of them."
