The flashing red and blue lights painted a grim picture at the diner as passers-by were already spreading rumours. Munashe and Ruvarashe were explaining everything to the police when the UAEC members arrived. They started getting information from the police before they questioned Munashe who told them the story and left out how Ruvarashe and Panashe used their gear. The UAEC had taken down everything Munashe had said and proceeded to take some information from Panashe too.
The interesting part was how Panashe escaped. He told them that he had managed to knock out the men with his fists before running away. Given his past cases of street brawls they believed him and left him to conclude their investigation with Munashe.
When the police had collected what they deemed to be evidence they left the diner leaving Munashe and his two companions to clean up the mess that was left in the diner. They managed to finish the cleaning several minutes after mid day.
Allen was getting suspicious at the college as he searched for Panashe. He had no choice but to visit Mellisa's class and called her out.
"What is it, Allen?" her tone wasn't inviting at all.
"It's about Panashe. You called me for his information yesterday and today he didn't come to school. There is no way Jess would allow Panashe to miss school until something goes wrong."
"Hey a client wanted his information and I gave it to him. Whatever they did is their business."
"You knew he was my friend. Why not give me a heads up?"
"Stop getting emotional Allen. If he dies he dies. I don't care about a stranger."
"Since when? Stop trying to act like a robot Mellisa. You are not one."
"Who said I am acting?"
"Did Sunday's hunt change you? You know it wasn't your fault those guys...."
"Are we done here, Allen?"
"What's wrong, Mellisa?"
Mellisa didn't answer but walked away quietly her mind haunting her. What had her uncle done. He never came back like he said he would and she kept the locations for transformers on a paper in her bag.
Allen left the school and went to check on the apartment but when he got there there were police barricades which made his heart skip a beat. There was no one in sight and the door was shut so he stood there and called out. A females voice shouted back saying Panashe was in the city centre.
Munashe and Ruvarashe were discussing the craziness of the night when Tapiwa walked in. He was shocked to his Panashe there sleeping in the diner rather than being at school.
"What did I miss?" he asked as he eyed the couple.
No one answered him.
Munashe received a message after Tapiwa had settled down. 'Come to the market. I have good news for you.' Munashe read the message silently. It was from Mr Reed and he didn't waste anytime.
"Ruvarashe. Take care of the other recruits. You two come with me." He ordered Tapiwa and Panashe to follow him. They drove off as they headed for the market.
Panashe wasn't feeling motivated as they walked past the stalls in the black market and Tapiwa was confused by it. "Seriously what's going on here?"
"We were attacked by a maniac called Nhamo." Munashe answered avoiding eye contact with Tapiwa. Tapiwa remained quiet this time as he pretended to think. He even caressed his chin to make it more believable.
As soon as they walked into the beads warehouse they were shocked. The amount of crates that were full of beads and the amount of people in the warehouse was impressive than the last they were there. When they walked into the room Mr Reed was comparing figures that were projected on a wall.
"Take seat foundation members. I have very crucial information for you." Mr Reed said as he switched off the projection.
"What do you have?"
"One of my men saw your little fiasco at night and he managed to follow Nhamo."
Munashe and Panashe gasped with intrigue but Tapiwa got confused.
"You know where Nhamo is hiding?" Panashe jolted up as hope filled his eyes.
"Nope. We managed to identify the van he is driving and the possible location he might be hiding."
"There are more vans in the city. Just get to the point." Tapiwa shot his statement to pretend as if he knew what was truly happening.
"It's a red van with no plates. It was parked in an alley on the outskirts of town heading over to the abandoned thermal powerplant. The police said he stole some electrical hardware from the labs right. So where else can he use it other than a place that was closed down due to its damage to the atmosphere."
"So he is trying to do what exactly with the laser?" Panashe asked.
"That's what my men are trying to find out. Now that is done for I have bad news."
"Wait there is more news?" Tapiwa was shocked.
"Can you please shut up. It's about the digital witches. They lost few members on a hunt on Sunday. They were trying to capture a predator anomaly. All of them were injured."
Panashe and Tapiwa looked at each other before looking back at Mr Reed. Their faces were in masks but Mr Reed knew that they were confused.
"They managed to awaken a sleeping giant." he tried to clarify it for them but Tapiwa asked stupidly.
"Giants are real."
"Munashe where did you find this guy." Mr Reed was now getting annoyed.
"I will find the picture of the anomaly for you some other time. The problem with this is if that anomaly manages to track them back to here it will cause problems with the UAEC."
"Why were they trying to capture it?" Munashe asked.
"That's the problem. I do believe house Humba is trying to capture more anomalies to aid them in obtaining power above all the anomalies of this world."
"What are you talking about?" Munashe asked because he was now clueless.
"Why do you think he rebelled five years ago. Do you think he only targeted owning the foundation. He wants to own the whole southern underworld foundations. The more power he gets the better his chances against the zulu and khoisan foundations which operate outside this region."
"What exactly is his endgame?" Munashe asked again.
"I. Don't. Know. " Mr Reed finalised his report and sat down.
"So let me get this straight. Munashe here will be fighting two battles. One against the man who wants to kill him and other against a criminal who is kidnapping people to build some machine...." Panashe paused for a moment and as if he had managed to figure out something stood up with hope.
"Nhamo is building something and in order to find him we must follow the trail from hardwares where things are sold in bulk."
Munashe and Mr Reed were impressed by Panashe's analogy and the nodded to each other.
"I will get my men on it. You keep you team ready to kill the predator anomaly if it manages to trace the witches back into the city. I will try to figure out what Humba wants." Mr Reed smiled as he left the small room.
"Let's go." Munashe told his crew and they left.
When Munashe and the two young men arrived at the diner the rest of the team was there. He felt it was now necessary to reveal everything to them.
"Sit down all of you. Today is the day I come clean." They all eyed each other because they have been expecting it.
"The Dzimba Dzemabwe foundation is part of a large network of monster hunters who have lived since the giants walked the earth. Every nation or continent have their own foundations that handle anomalies and organised crimes. Our duty is too kill all anomalies because most of them tend to prey on humans."
"Not impressed at all. What about Nhamo and Humba?" Tapiwa asked.
"Humba and Nhamo are using anomalous creatures and objects to further their own agendas and try to kill us. If we don't stop them they will be free to continue as they please and cause more problems than necessary."
"Why not let the UAEC deal with anomalies?" Chipo asked .
"The reason why you are all here is because of your resolve to protect others. When the governments of the world's found uranium their first goal was nuclear weapons and look at how that ended up for Japan."
"So what will happen if Humba decides to kill all of us."
"We will stop him. He knows that without the proper anomalies he is just weak against our sister foundations. The council right now can't act against him because they don't know his plan and what anomalies he has managed to get control of."
There was a silence in the diner for brief moment before Tapiwa opened his mouth. "I like this job. I get to have a purpose."
The UAEC were busy at the city council observation centre as they ran through the footage of the entire city. They had managed to find one important clue and why it was impossible for the police to catch Nhamo. It wasn't the rod that was the only problem.
"They are using rooftops to travel and just pop out of nowhere. These guys know exactly what they are doing and they happen to know where their targets are at the point of kidnapping. The night Panashe witnessed the kidnapping it happened by accident. The boy had messed up and his guardian got to pay for it."
"Yes. And ...."
The ringing phone in the room disturbed the briefing and the captain picked it up.
"Put it on loud." one of the UAEC members said and the captain nodded.
"Hello."
"Hey it's Munashe. The superintendent diverted my call to you. I have some information you could use."
"Tell me what you have detective."
"Nhamo is currently operating using a red van without any plates. I got the information from someone who saw what happened yesterday."
"Thank you, Munashe. Anything else?"
"No sir."
The captain cancelled the call and his men started searching for the red van. The captain observed his men work as fast as they could. The city council members were just standing in the room feeling useless.
"Listen to me. Tell all the security companies to call us whenever they have a problem with their surveillance systems. We are nailing this guy the next time he surfaces. Some goes for you council members." the captain ordered as he observed the cameras.
"We have a red van with no plates, captain."
"Where is it right now?"
"It's parked at a bar in the outskirts of town sir."
"Continue tagging the targets. Team one you are with me."
The selected members followed the captain and the remaining ones kept their eyes on the red van.
Members of Nhamo's crew were collecting workshop materials that they had stashed in the bar and had decided to get a few drinks. They were complaining about how Nhamo was now just now a puppet for Mr Fear to play with. Their hatred for Mr Fear was well placed since he only talked with Nhamo and not the rest.
"We need money not some fancy toys for those zombie engineers."
"We are lucky we are not picking food for them. Nhamo is losing his senses I tell you. Let's leave him and that creature."
"Are you crazy. Then they will brainwash us. This will be over soon and we will be back in business."
"Whatever, let's go. I hate that look he gives us when we are late."
The men covered their faces and left the bar. The four men got into the van and they drove off. A red drone was tailing them when the driver saw it and immediately stopped the van.
"Sh*t. We have a tail. Pop smoke. Pop smoke."
Several canisters were thrown from the van and within seconds smoke had managed to engulf a large enough radius and the men abandoned the van. The drone managed to pickup one of the men and followed him.
As soon as the drone left chasing one of the men the remaining jumped back into the van and drove off. An airship was now following the van.
"It's the freaking UAEC man. Call Nhamo."
"No way brother. We follow protocols from Mr Fear. He is always watching the news."
"You want me to draw the attention of the police and news media."
"Yes. That's what he said we should do."
Before the driver could come up with an idea to draw attention there was a loud thud on the top of the van.
