THE DOWRY

Reaching almost to the door hearing them saying, "But we already made up the dowry."

Unable to believe what she was hearing she continue walking toward the dining room, having no idea what they were talking about. Their footsteps were right behind her as she took her seat as though she didn't hear what they said.

The silence around the dining table was frightening, except for the knocking of spoons as they dished out for themselves and the children. Sarahiah knew if they all joined together with her dad she will have no say about this marriage. With everyone busy eating Sarahiah just nibbled on the food.

When Jerod observed everyone eating and she wasn't eating he knew she heard them in the kitchen, he also knew the others won't say anything to her because they love her a lot and cannot see her unhappy.

Jerod was surprised though when Matt said, "Sarah we already made up the dowry."

"My what? What is a dowry?" Sarahiah belches out angry with them for taking sides with dad.

"Well Sarah when a girl is going to get married, the father of the bride gives a portion of money or a piece of property even jewelry to the groom's family,"  Darius said seeing how she was looking at them as though she doesn't have the faintest idea what they were talking about.

They all saw how pale her face became while she tries processing the information that they gave her, she then asked as she looked at them, "And how much dowry is the groom's family asking to take me away from you all?"

It was her dad that responded by saying, "Honey, your brothers help me make up the money so there's no need to worry."

Sarahiah was not satisfied with that answer, so she asked in a more serious tone of voice, "Dad, please tell me how much they are asking, or should I say the calling price for a bride today?"

"Look honey, you are making it sound so bad," her dad said as he didn't like the way she was speaking of the dowry as though he was paying someone to take her from him as if she was some kind of burden or product for sale.

"Sarah we make up the two hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars already, so relax," Darius replied.

The four boys looked at her as they saw her face turn from pale to shock, and the tears slowly condensed in her eyes and were threatening to fall, but then they heard her speak but it was just a whisper, "Are you paying someone to take me away?"

Darius couldn't bear how she looked or sounded so he knelt before her and said in a coaxing manner, "Sarah, sweetie, it's not like that, and you know we love you very much, but you have to get married sooner or later."

"Who said I have to?" Sarahiah refuted in a worried tone as she looked at them with her eyes blurry with tears ready to flow any minute.
