Sixty Three

Caleb had been working in the stores so long, and he had never changed anything from the way his mom and dad had it. 'This had been our down fall all those years,' he thought.

...

Caleb left the assistant manager and went for a drive, he passed by store one where he saw sale signs and the store was busy. 'When Nevil was managing this store we never had any rush, it has been four months since it was sold and look at the vast difference,' he thought.

Caleb was tempted to go inside but he decided against it and stopped at the bakery where he got some puffs and jelly buns. 'I notice that she was nibbling on these most of the time or drinking her milk shakes, but since we got married she only sat one say at the table and we never had a meal together again.'

Caleb reached home for half five and it seemed as though she had only just reached home a few minutes before he did. Caleb noticed her face was pale and she looked worn out and she was in all black, he covered his mouth and thought, 'Dear God, did her dad die?'

Caleb went to her but she had just finished washing her face and walked into the room, closing the door. Caleb thought, 'Why didn't I see what was happening, these few days she was quiet. She was grieving and I wasn't there for her.'

Caleb recalled the voice in his head, 'If she is yours, where is she? When I called, was she in the church? Oh God, what can I do? She wants to be alone in her thoughts and grieving,' he thought as he took the goodies to the kitchen where he saw a container of food, 'She bought dinner for me?'

Caleb felt hurt for not being there for her when she had kept her word and stood with him for the past two weeks neglecting her own business. Caleb went to his room as he felt so disappointed in himself for not being there for her.

Caleb laid down as the feeling was so overwhelming while he was thinking, 'I will speak with her in the morning.' Caleb returned downstairs after he took a shower and ate then locked the doors and went to bed.

Caleb was unable to fall asleep as he was thinking about her and he only fell asleep after two on Sunday morning.

Caleb got up around half eight, he went to her room were he saw the table she set up to work and it was all messed up. The room was also messed up, he wondered what was wrong as he stepped in and stumbled on the mat, almost falling but ended up hitting down a shoebox from on the table. "Oh God, look at mess now?"

Caleb bent down and took up the enveloped from the floor, most of it was sealed and when he reached for the last one he saw it was opened and some money was half way out. He looked inside the envelope where he saw it had almost fifteen thousand dollars. He then felt the others that were sealed and they all felt like money.
