Chapter 44: Entered His Apartment (Part 8)

Ji Chicheng raised his eyebrows, his tone once again returning to its usual indifference, "Do you have any objections?"

Ji Anning shook her head, "No... no objections."

Damn, she wouldn't dare have any.

It was truly a moment of mental short-circuit that had sparked her curiosity about his affairs.

Ji Anning didn't speak again, and as her silence endured, the atmosphere in the car settled into a lull.

The Ji Family's home was still far away, one located in the east of the city and the other in the south.

Ji Anning, groggy again, began dozing off. Ji Chicheng glanced at her from the corner of his eye and then he reached out to turn on the radio.

Is it that you don't understand ruthless love,

If feelings weren't wasted without reason

Even if we never meet again

Some hatred can be crushing, spreading ashes without regret

Give me ten thousand years, a year or two—it doesn't matter anyway

Some love, you can never escape the inescapable net of Heaven

I would rather sacrifice all my spiritual progress for the sake of forgetting in front of you, falling apart

...

Unsure which channel it was, the lyrics of the song being broadcast caused Ji Chicheng's hand to tremble slightly.

"Even if we never see each other again, we'll meet again; with a disfigured countenance, some hatred, crushing bones and spreading ashes without regret, give me ten thousand years, a year or two, it doesn't matter, some love, you can't escape the inescapable net of Heaven..."

Suddenly, two voices overlapped. Ji Chicheng turned his head in surprise to look at the girl huddled in the corner behind him.

Her voice, slightly hoarse, was softly humming along with the radio.

In her singing voice, there was a poignant sadness and helplessness that touched one's heart.

The speed of the car, unbeknownst to them, slowed down.

The long night, the sorrowful singing voice, and the beautiful lyrics, all stirred their emotions.

...

The living room light was still on as Ji Anning was awakened by Ji Chicheng in her sleep.

Upon waking, she realized she was covered in sweat.

Sweating? Has the fever subsided?

She reached up to touch her forehead; there was no hint of the previous heat, only a sticky discomfort from the sweat.

"It seems the fever has subsided on its own."

Ji Anning, holding her dirty clothes, got out of the car and followed behind Ji Chicheng, muttering to herself.

A doting smile flickered in the man's deep black eyes.

He lowered his gaze to look at their shadows cast on the ground, one tall and one short.

His lips, pursed, couldn't help but curve into a slight smile.

"Mom, why haven't you gone to bed yet?"

Ji Chicheng and Ji Anning entered the house one after the other, and upon entry, Ji Anning immediately noticed Yang Yufang sitting anxiously on the sofa.

She kicked off her shoes, not bothering with slippers, and rushed over to Yang Yufang.

Hearing Ji Anning's call of 'Mom,' Yang Yufang's anxious face brightened, "How could I sleep when you haven't come back yet?"

She looked at Ji Anning, rising to greet her.

When she got close to Ji Anning, she noticed the dress Ji Anning was wearing and paused, "This is..."

She remembered the clothes Ji Anning had worn when she left that evening were not these.

A flicker of guilt passed through Ji Anning's eyes, which she masked with a smile, "Oh, don't even mention it. Danning and I went to the gym, and I was all sweaty. She insisted on dragging me to the fountain for a shower."

Upon hearing this, Yang Yufang frowned, "That child, always causing a fuss."

While the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law were talking, Ji Chicheng had already walked past them, heading straight for the stairs.

Yang Yufang glanced at Ji Chicheng and then asked Ji Anning with a puzzled look, "How come you returned with your uncle?"

"Oh..." Ji Anning looked towards Ji Chicheng, who had reached the foot of the stairs, and said, "He went to find Danning, so we just came back together."

Upon hearing this, Yang Yufang smiled slightly and said, "It seems there's a high chance Danning will become your aunt-in-law."
