Triplets

"Hello, Dr. Christina." Miya softly utters when she enters the doctor's office before shutting the door.

Christina smiled and signaled her to take a seat, so she approached the desk and sat down in the chair.

"How are you doing today, Miya?" Christina asked as she stared at Miya with gentle eyes.

"Except for my boobs feeling sore, me regularly feeling tired, the morning sickness, me having vivid and strange dreams, the stomach cramps, me developing an uncanny sense of smell, and all the other thing that comes with being pregnant, I am doing pretty well today, doc. Thank you for asking." Miya said with a jovial expression.

"Haha, the joy of entering motherhood. Where is your husband?" Dr. Christina asked when she noticed that Miya was alone.

"Ho, he's waiting in the car. Lucas is not a big fan of hospital smells, so I told him to stay in the car." Miya said as she tried to force a smile. Yet she could tell that Dr. Christina did not believe her lies.

Miya felt so embarrassed. Still, she wore a bold face and pretended as though she did not feel like breaking down and crying.

"Okay, let's talk about what you came here for." Christina hastily said when she noticed the distress in Miya's eyes.

"Okay, doc," Miya said with a faint smile.

"I am going to have blood drawn from you so that I can run some tests."

"UM, okay."

Christina laughed when she heard the fear in Miya's voice, even though she tried to appear brave.

"Don't tell me you are afraid of needles," Christina said before gently giggling.

"I'm not." Miya straightforwardly said, yet she did not believe in her own words.

"Okay, I was worried that you were. But since you are not, let's begin."

A minute later, Dr. Christina was ready to draw Miya blood. She had everything set up and had on her glove. She then tied a rubber tourniquet around the upper part of Miya's arm.

"Okay. Now, I need you to make a fist so I can easily find a vein." Christina said.

"Ah, I lied. I am definitely afraid of needles." Miya announced as she shut her eyes in fear.

"Haha, I know. Just keep your eyes shut. It will be over soon. You have to be strong for you and the baby, and stay positive." Christina said as she inserted the needle into Miya's vein.

Miya kept her eyes closed, yet tears still found a way to escape and flowed down her eyes. She felt like Dr. Christina's last sentence had nothing to do with the needle and more to do with her life.

"It's all done," Christina said.

Miya opened her eyes and saw two napkins in the doc's hands. She then smiled and accepted it.

"Thank you," Miya uttered as she wiped her face.

"You are welcome. Now I need you to pee in this cup, and afterward, we are going to do a pap smear test on you."

"Pap smear test? Is that necessary?"

"Of course, it is."

"Okay."

Since she did not want to argue with her doctor, Miya grabbed the cup, gave a quick smile at Christina, and headed into the restroom.

'I am sorry, Miya. We all have to be liars sometimes to protect ourselves. I can't let anything slip concerning this child and your health since Mr. Ash has not let me breathe with his questions concerning your pregnancy, and I need to be prepared to answer all of his inquiries.

A few seconds later, Miya returned with her urine, and Christina submitted it for testing.

Then Miya was asked by Christina to rest on the bed in the room, and she did. Next, she laid back and placed her feet in stirrups.

Christina then inserted a speculum into Miya's vagina. Following that, she quickly brushed a long, thin swab over Miya's cervix to take a cell sample.

"We are done here," Christina said after placing the cell in a petri dish, and sent it for testing.

"Okay," Miya replied.

"Now to the fun part. Are you ready to catch a glimpse of your eight-week fetus through ultrasound?"

"Yes, I am!"

Miya could not contain the excitement in her tone when Christina's question flowed through her ears. This was her first ultrasound, and she seemed to be understandably anxious. Getting a glimpse of her baby for the first time was a big deal to her, even if Lucas was not there.

"I am going to be performing a transvaginal ultrasound. So you don't need to get up."

"Alright," Miya replied as she tightly held onto the sheet.

Christina inserted a smaller ultrasound transducer into Miya's vagina and rested against the back of the vagina to create an image.

As they both looked at the screen of the ultrasound machine, Miya's eyes became watery. She could not believe she had someone else developing inside of her.

However, her smile and joy began to decrease when she noticed the fear in Doctor Christina's eyes and the shock on her face.

"Is something wrong with my child?" She asked.

"No. The babies are okay." Christina said.

"Oh, good. Wait, babies?"

"Yes."

"How many?"

"Three."

Miya found herself lacking words and emotions. She could not comprehend the thought that she was going to be a mother of three with no financial and emotional support from her husband.

"We've discussed this before, that doing an intrauterine insemination procedure may lead to multiple pregnancies," Christina explained, with the hope that Miya would understand and not make a fuss or think about abortion.

"I know, and I am not blaming the hospital or feel regretful that I am carrying three kids for the man that I love. I am happy to have such a tremendous blessing, and thank you, doctor, for helping me with the process of conceiving them." Miya replied with a bright smile.

'What a robust woman. I feel so bad for making you have triplets for a man you do not know and who doesn't know you. But maybe this will turn out for the best. I hope so.' Christina thought as she gazed at Miya's cheerful face.
