Before Nneka left Toyin's place, she managed to brief her. Toyin was mute in disbelieve. they got home and Kassim was nowhere to be found. He abandoned the poor girl at home to nurse her pain all alone.
Nneka feelings towards Ope was mixed, a feeling of pity for her and a feeling of jealousy for sharing her man with her. They waited till 7pm but Kassim never showed up. They left back to Toyin's place that night. Toyin husband's flight was scheduled to arrive Abuja by 6pm and he would pick a chartered taxi to Lokoja that evening. How will he feel when he comes and see Nneka in their house? Nneka don't want to create problem for Toyin because she have been living in harmony with her husband. They have just two children David and Tolani.
David was in boarding school while Tolani schools in Lagos alongside with her father.
Toyin's husband worked with a big telecommunication company in Lagos as a legal adviser. He only comes to Lokoja by weekend and returns on Monday with the first flight. Toyin too is a lawyer, she and her husband met at the law school and they have been married for thirteen years.
Nneka: "Toyin, let me go and lodge in an hotel, I don't want your husband to meet me here", Nneka pleaded with her.
Toyin: "I already told him you are here in the house and he's eager to meet you."
Nneka: "..." ... "Did you tell him what happened between me and my husband?"
Toyin: "Yes of course!"
Nneka: "..."
Toyin: "you expect me to lie to him? I have never lied to my husband and I don't intend to ever lie to him".
Toyin: "This is one secret that have helped me and my husband live together in harmony since we got married. When he comes, he will intervene and use his masculine wisdom to address the matter".
Nneka felt ashamed of herself because she have been lying to her husband and he also have been lying to her. They had caught each other lying to each other on many occasions. Maybe she shouldn't have told Toyin what happened? How will she be able to face her husband when he comes? Nneka thought to herself.
When Toyin husband finally arrived, it was late in the night, he only came to say hi with Toyin.
When Nneka saw the way Toyin and her husband held themselves romantically, Nneka had an urge to cry, but she let them out before she bursted into tears.
While Nneka was struggling with her tears, Nneka noticed a beep on her phone, it was Kassim. He sent her a text of apology for what had happened in the morning.
Kassim: "My dear I'm sorry for what happened in the morning, it was the devil who pushed me.
I know I have offended you but I still love you".
Nneka took her phone and deleted the message in anger. Love my foot! Nonsense and ingredient!
The following morning, Nneka called her mother-in-law to inform her that she was no longer in her son's house due to irreconcilable differences and the need to advice Ope to return home.
her mothers in-law tried to asked her what happened but Nneka insisted only Kassim or Ope will tell her about the hot soup that burnt down the house.
The following day she was on the road to Lokoja. Kassim's and family are from Ajase close to Omu-Aran in Kwara state.
When she arrived, she called Nneka to come to the house. She also called Kassim to come but he refused to show up.
She begged Nneka to return home but she refused, what she said shock her mother in-law.
Nneka: "How can I stay with a man who abused his sister right in my presence? Would I be happy living with him again? How will the wound he created be healed? What can erase that memory of what I saw that day?"
Nneka: "It was obvious Kassim will not come, it's getting late ma and I need to go, Nneka told her mother in-law.
Mama: "Nneka you can't go anywhere, this is your house, she said as she held Nneka and her tears swept her off her feet.
Nneka broke down in tears as she saw the old woman wept, Ope also joined them as they all wept like someone just died for them that day.
The tears they shed that day wouldn't be greater if Kassim was dead.
Nneka was tempted to stay back because of mama's tears and plead but she was adamant.
If Nneka stay back, who will encourage her and keep her mind off the ugly situation like Toyin will do?
Nneka pretended she wanted to use the toilet and sneaked out.
Mama had stayed three days but her son Kassim was yet to show up.
What will mama do right now? she was confuse and did not know what to do.
