The next morning, a Saturday, Carlos went to look for Fei in her temporary room. Although she was a maid, regardless of her being a mutant, she was also Carlos' bodyguard. He treated her like a friend and so she had her own room. Furthermore, Fei's room wasn't in the servants' hall, instead, it was in the guest hall.
Countless people felt this decision was terrible and could lead to many problems, but as the young master of the house, Carlos had the final say.
He stubbornly insisted that Fei had to live on the same floor, with his reasoning being that Fei needs to be close to him to protect him. In addition, other maids could bully Fei, something that, as her friend, Carlos was obligated to prevent. However, a room on the third floor could not be used unless the head of the house agreed; so it was settled that Fei would live in one of the guest rooms instead.
Fei didn't really understand the differences between her living space and others. As a practical person, she felt that the point of a living space is to live. Perhaps her bedding and pillows are made of softer material and her room is larger with luxurious furnishings; but she felt that it was a waste of effort and space.
However, since it was her master that assigned this room to her, she was pleased with it.
Carlos, on the other hand, was very displeased. He despised how shameless his father was, gifting him a friend that is also a bodyguard, yet allowing her to get persecuted by others and to room with regular servants. It was ridiculous!
He could not prepare a room beforehand, and now he had to deal with the embarrassment of letting Fei use a plain and small guest room. He once again vowed to design a new room entirely dedicated to Fei.
Carlos sneaked a glance at Fei, and when he saw her expressionless face and motionless stance that seemed like an overbearing mountain that's existed through the Earth's creation, he felt a pang of immense guilt at his thoughtlessness. To distract himself, he decided to give himself a goal: to teach 'it' to Fei. Learning 'it' is a must if Fei was going to play video games or any kind of game with him.
"Fei, I'm going to teach 'it' to you," Carlos said with determination. He tugged the hem of Fei's clothing, walking towards the elevators.
Fei tilted her head and allowed herself to be pulled along. She was curious about what her master would show her next.
The entire Rochester family lived on the third floor, while the guests lived on the second floor. This arrangement was decided when the mansion was first built. Even if Carlos wanted Fei closer to him, he couldn't randomly place Fei onto the third floor even though there were enough rooms; he needed Daddy's approval.
Although Daddy is quite a traditional person who strictly stuck to the rules, he might relent a little if I really begged, Carlos thought deviously as he arrived at the elevators and pressed the button to go up.
There were multiple elevators, and one of them was exclusive to the Rochester family. As such, Carlos did not have to wait for long before the elevator opened. He strode in, with Fei following close behind.
The few servants that stood nearby could not help but be envious of Fei's good luck. To be personally led to the third floor through an elevator exclusive to the Rochester family would be a great honor!
Upstairs, imposing portraits of the Rochester family hung in the main corridor. As she glanced at the hallway lined with paintings, Fei saw a portrait of the old master when he was younger and a portrait of the girl with grey eyes she saw yesterday. But she did not see a painting of her master.
Carlos followed her line of view and told her with his eyes lit up in excitement, "All of the members in our family get their portraits painted when they turn twenty. My sis Eyrie is 21, so her's was painted last year. My portrait will be the most awesome of them all; it's going to be at the center of the hallway!" He pointed at a space on the wall.
Fei nodded with an understanding smile. But Carlos wasn't fooled.
He pouted. You've got to learn Language A fast; I want to actually talk to you! Talking to myself is no fun, he thought to himself. His determination strengthened further as he sped up his walk towards one of the third-floor lounges.
Fei followed his lead, struggling to understand what was it that made her master displeased.
When the pair arrived at the entrance of the lounge guarded by a few guards, the doors automatically opened, leading into a spacious room with high ceilings. Four gray leather couches surrounded a polished wooden table embedded with glass rivers. The room also had huge windows that opened to a view that overlooks the entire city.
Two large bookcases stood tall at the side, with specially organized with books suitable for children on the lower cases, to the more complex books on the upper cases.
Carlos strolled in and didn't hesitate as he lunged onto one of the sofas with great familiarity. There was a package of copy paper on the table, and he grabbed a piece, using a pencil to scribble on it. After a while, Carlos patted the seat beside him, gesturing Fei to come sit as well.
Fei cautiously walked in and sat. Carlos smiled and presented the piece of paper to her and began to read seriously off from it.
"A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H. I. J. K. L. M. N… O. P. Q. R. S. T. U. V. W. X. Y. Z." It was the alphabet.
