Seirin had a lot of good first years so they were able to secure a spot in the InterHigh while Kagami and the others were being preserved for the InterHigh finals. The finals were against Shutoku, who had recently beat the HBI team.

As they stepped on the court, they could tell that Shutoku had improved and with their recent downgrade (losing Kuroko), their chances of victory were slim. As Midorima unplugged his headphones, he said: "Today, it says that Cancers shall succeed." The Seirin players tensed up. They knew that the daily zodiac signs always enhanced Midorima's playing skill, and today, it was absolute. Koganei, Mitobe, and Izuki seemed to have come to terms with their predetermined loss but Kagami, Riko, and Hyuga didn't. "We could still win," they said, in an attempt to lift their spirits.

This was their first match in a while so some of them were a bit anxious as the whistle was blown. Kagami got possession and quickly dunked the ball unnecessarily, exerting too much energy for the start of the game. But Midorima retaliated and scored a three from the other side of the court ostentatiously. The score was 3-2. Midorima gained possession this time and made the score 6-2, by scoring a three. Kagami caught up by scoring a flashy layup and a dunk. It was basically a contest to see who was flashier between the two and though Kagami looked flashier because Midorima was shooting threes, he was in the lead by two points. After that lead, Shutoku focused only on defence to maintain their lead, but Hyuga (Seirin's shooting guard) started scoring threes by shooting with high arcs so that they couldn't block or intercept it.

Shutoku still had the advantage, since Midorima could shoot from anywhere with a 100% success rate so Shutoku earned their points back and added a little more. Before you knew it, Shutoku claimed victory over Seirin and won the preliminaries.
