Chapter 7: Opening the package
Mc's POV
The night went by in the blink of an eye: my attention was focused on the system and the seemingly endless list consisting of bloodlines, weapons and abilities known as jutsu, these were found in the system store along with an option to trade artifacts of this world for NP.
The inventory function could hold anything bought from the system until I decided to use it, the only flaw was that it couldn't actually store anything outside of the system and once I took out the items I bought I could not return them inside.
The odd voice from before had guided me briefly about how to use the system, long story short I could buy anything as long as I had points which could be earned by killing beasts or trading with the system. The system would appraise anything I killed or sold and give a 'fair' price or so it claims, I couldn't really know if this was true or not.
I had also been notified of a beginner's package—the system had made sure to elaborate its importance, apparently the system only managed the shop, inventory and my rank while the rest had to be learnt by me. I have yet to check the package.
The old man would wake up anytime now, I still have all day to look at the package but for now I'll continue training like always.
...
''Are you already giving up boy!!'' The whole forest shook as the old man screamed at me, we had been training even more intensely today than ever—this was a welcome situation for me but my body couldn't keep going anymore.
The fact that we didn't even have break-fast today made this new regime harder, but if I gave up I'd be wasting the old man's time and mine but most importantly I couldn't attain the power I need to protect what I value in this world. It isn't hard to realize that power is law in this world and anyone who opposes dies along with everything they love.
'Quitting is not an option!!'-' I screamed internally before continuing with my exercise.
Hours went on like this, me constantly tearing my muscles only to have them barely healed by the old man. His new methods were cruel but as his disciple I knew there was a meaning to them so I would continue.
The sun finally set inside the mountains and only then did the old man decide it was time to stop, by now I was a panting mess and sweating profusely from every pore of my skin; I could only lie on my back on the damp grass.
''Hahahaha today was a good session my dear boy, very good.'' He stood above me with a grin plastered on his face, sometimes I felt like he enjoyed seeing me struggle, a flash of light engulfed us and we arrived back at the house.
''I'll go bath.'' I rolled my eyes and stood up unsteadily and walked to the river.
''Hey boy!!'' A sudden shout came from the old man.
I turned towards him slowly, he threw a yellow unusual fruit towards me and disappeared into the house, I'm pretty sure his thoughts were how cool he must've looked. This earned another eye-roll from me, sometimes I wondered how someone with such an old face could act so silly: it felt like I was mentally older than him.
I went further down the stream and took off my clothes, I could finally take a well-deserved bath. The fruit and meditation could wait for now I just wanted to close my eyes.
I took this time to open the system and activated the package, soon after selecting the package there was a series of notifications.
DING!
''Host has acquired 20000NP'
DING!
''Host has acquired the chakra training and control scroll.''
DING!
''Host has acquired the Kiba dual swords''
DING!
''Host has acquired the D-rank body flicker technique.''
DING!
''Host has acquired the E-rank substitution jutsu.''
''System, show me a brief summary about the chakra training scroll.'' I demanded.
'''The scroll is a compilation of knowledge about chakra, how to train it and how it can be utilized, the same goes for the body flicker and substitution jutsu''
The system's explanation didn't do much to clear my confusion but the scrolls seemed to have the information I required to embark on my chakra training.
I left the stream and dried myself as quickly as possible, after wearing my clothes I picked up the fruit and started eating it—the fruit was dry and had a weak sour taste but it was edible.
I walked over to the old man who was already grilling fish on a flame, the enticing aroma: enough to make me salivate caused my stomach to rumble.
''Sit down boy, the food is almost ready?'' The old man said.
I nodded and sat down, besides the occasional crackling of the firewood there was no other sound as we both just minded our own business, we never really talked much besides when he taught me, this was somewhat uncomfortable sometimes but besides questions related to the book or training, I couldn't really think of anything else to ask him. I had also noticed that the old man didn't like being asked too many personal questions since the first time I did so he opted to change the subject.
''What's the outside world like old man?'' I asked after a few minutes of silence, acting like a stranger towards my benefactor and teacher didn't sit well with me, even if he seemed satisfied with occasionally teasing me, having a decent conversation while also learning more about the outside world was not a bad way to pass time.
''Hmmm.....''The old man held his chin and hummed gently.
''I guess I can tell you a few stories of my great adventures.'' His chest bloated with pride as he spoke, his antics never cease to amaze me.
''I guess this could also act as a way to teach you.'' He mused out loud, I raised an eyebrow at his statement, he seemed obsessed with teaching me a lot of topics in a short space of time.
''Then tell me your opinion about this world.'' I concluded, the 'pity' was evident in my eyes.
''Well if I'm really being honest then....'' The old man paused and looked to the ground, his eyes were obscured by shadows making it impossible to discern his expression but there was a chilling vibe he was emitting.
''This world isn't meant for the weak, those without power can only watch as everything they cherish is destroyed by those who hold power and backing, honor here is just a joke and heroes never live long. This whole planet is jungle and might makes right.'' The old man spoke, every word was said with a grim tone.
''Is that why you push me so hard?'' I asked, although I had already come to that conclusion.
The old man looked back up with a soft expression and sincere eyes.
''I will be at peace if I know you won't be kicked around once you leave this place.'' His words warmed my heart—this old man undoubtedly cared about me, his every action had my well-being in mind.
'I can't disappoint him!!' I declared internally, although I didn't know much about him or even know his name it still didn't prevent me from viewing him as a father figure; a parent is someone who loves their child unconditionally after all blood relations come after. We talked for a few more hours after that but nothing really important. Just stories and tales commonly told by bards in this world.
''Thanks teacher, I promise to attain enough power to put you at ease.'' I said with resolve. I stood up from the fire and went to my usual resting place.
I sat and meditated for an extra hour. I opened my eyes after the one hour mark, I had to study up on chakra by tonight.
I opened my system inventory and took out the 'chakra training and control scroll' and started reading with utmost focus.
...….
Hey and sorry for the not releasing any chapter last week, I had a few problems with my laptop. Please enjoy these chapters.
Also the person who usually helps me edit some errors isn't around so chapter 6 and 7 may not be similar to the others.
Also how do you like the current pacing, please let me know.😁
