The Maid Was a Jinx, Indeed Chapter 6

Days blurred together and before Miriam knew it, she could finally walk! Huzzah!

Well... by walk she meant stand up hobble abit and hop about, before falling back onto the ground. But still, it was major progress that she had made as far as Miriam was concerned.

Beckie would continue to come feed her over these past few months and, as well as a few different maids who seemed to rotate on a schedule, where one would almost always be present and if not, they'd only be absent for an hour and no longer. So that poor Miriam was never left alone.

There were 3 maids that tended to her needs on a rotating schedule, Beckie was not included in this number because she showered up every day without fail for feedings.

The first maid was the tall light brown haired maid that she had given the nickname in her head to as "Bootlicker".

You know, the one who said she was sooooo sure her mother was pregnant with twins.

Anyway, Miriam came to find out soon that Bootlickers real name was Amis. Which Miriam was pretty sure was a country bumping boy name from somewhere in the British isles but alas, she didn't study names in her previous life so who knows.

Her age was that of almost 20, because recently she said her 20th birthday was soon.

Anyway, Bootlicker Amis was a second generation Irish American so although she didn't have the accent, she still sometimes gave off subtle "irish" vibes to Miriam.

Above all else that one needed to know about Bootlicker Amis was that she talked, like, alot.

Always blathering about something and she seemed to act way superior than she actually was to Beckie.

Bootlicker Amis wasn't that important to Miriam but she did give her vast amounts of information about this time period, albiet if they were abot nonsensical or impractical to put into use.

Such as how a neighboring small plantation owner had third son who was around her age and single. His name was Jeb and he liked to play the Harmonica and was abit of what you'd call a 'bad boy' back in modern times.

He'd recently apparabtly gotten into abit of a drunken brawl in a town nearby where her aunt lived and her aunt just happened to be out shopping with some lady friends of hers when she saw the whole fiasco this Jeb guy had started. Of course this aunt of Amis itmeditely told her niece to stay away from examples of bad boys like Jeb but as the story goes it seemed to have the opposite effect on her niece.

Sigh, young maidens surely had over active imaginations.

Anyway the second maid in the care duty rotation of hers was named Bridgette.

Bridgette was apparantly the second eldest daughter out of 11 kids in her family, while she was only the 5th kid born.

Apparantly her dad was a blacksmith by trade and he had helped make weapons for the war of 1812, although she said her father wasn't adult when he provided said help.

Miriam was skeptical but she didn't want to dash this poor girls dreams.

Bridgette was apparantly 17 this year.

Bridgette was a kind and sweet girl. So Miriam liked her very much.

However, Bridgette had one large fault with her.

That one was was that she was utterly, completely, clumsy.

The number of vases and other various things she's dropped in Miriam room or accidentally scratched cannot be counted or her own two mere hands. Never the less, Miriam gave her a A for effort in her heart.

Bridget was short and abit chubby, with tanned skin and hair so blond it was almost white. Topped off with eyes that were grayish. blue.

She kind of looked like one of those "realistically proportioned barbie dolls" that Miriam had seen advertisements for in her previous life.

The third and last maidservant Miriam really didn't have opinion of. Her name was Beatrice and she didn't talk much. She had acne scars are her dace and she seemed to be in her early twenties.

Thin as a stick, with dry looking brown hair that was abit wavy, which was so long that it went downto her bum. Although she usually had her hair worn in a neat top bun.

Miriams nickname for Beatrice in her mind was Rice. Because honestly, the girl was pretty plain.

Not very entertaining or interesting.

Anyway, it was mid day just slightly after noon, when Miriam heard screaming start a few doors down from her.

Footsteps rushed down the hallway, and she heard women talking in the hallway near her door.

Beatrice was taking care of her today and Beckie wasn't here at the moment so it was just her and Rice girl.

Beatrice was currently reading a book about house keeping, or trying to anyway. She seemed to have abit of trouble with it.

The maids outside the hall were whispering but didn't think a baby would eavesdrop on them as Miriam covertly and slowly shuffled closer to the door pretending to be playing with a wool knitted ball.

"I heard that the madam of the house has gone into labor finally. Her stomach is so huge. I hope the pregnancy goes well."

The second maid responded by saying " I heard another maid say she thinks its twins and when the doctor examined her last month he said there may be more than one baby, according to what a maid in the room at the time told me."

Miriam had a good guess at who this first 'maid' they were referring to was.

'Bootlicker, cheh.'

The maids walked further down the hall and Miriam continued to listen to the screams as the got louder and louder, and then, they got quieter and quieter.

Miriam had foreboding feeling wash over her.

She had studied medicine extensively so she knew that when the screaming got quieter and quieter until it stopped, there was a chance that it stopped for a bad reason.

She did not hear any cheers or praise.

Bad sign.

All she could think to herself was that this was a bad sign

Quick footateps came towards her room but did not stop, and instead kept going past her room. The footsteps sounded as if someone was running. What felt like forever later, she heard multiple footsteps run past her room again, this time in the direction in which the master of the plantation lived.

Her mother was heavily pregnant when she saw her a few days ago, a tingling feeling went down her spine.

Miriam hoped she was wrong.

Beatrice finally closer her book with her brow furrowed. Getting up from the corner of the room where she was sitting in a rocking chair, she proceeded to Miriam before bending down and scooping her up into her arms.

Miriam was hoping beyond all hope that Rice girl would take her out to investigate the commotion, but the answer to her question arrived with a knock on the door.

Beatrice hesitantly went forwards and deliberately opened the bedroom door.

A older maid servant looked at Miriam in Beatrices arms and motioned Beatrice to follow her with Miriam in hand.
