Kittys Confusion Chapter 42

The aurburn haired woman took her child and quickly exited the kitchen, clearly knowing what kind of mood her 'employer' was now in.

As Fiona exited, she sent a last glance of concern at Miriam, before she and Bannon swiftly exited the kitchen in a deathly quiet, mouse-like fashion.

It was at this point, that Henry re-emerged from the depths of the house carrying two large, and dry old blankets.

Upon seeing his entrance, a bright smile appeared on Miriam little fairy-like face and she rushed up to the Spaniard and took one blanket from his arms, almost causing the other to fall.

Luckily Henry quickly stabilized himself and the remaining blanket so it did not plummet to the most likely not entirely clean kitchen floor.

Full of mirth, Miriam completely ignored the three acquainted males in the room and went over to the still slightly shivering child and gently held the blanket up to him, trying to wrap it around his shoulders.

The boy would be an idiot to not know what the little girl was trying to do right now.

This scene warmed his slightly hardened cold little heart. Here this child was much smaller than himself trying to take care of him first before herself. If only his family were this sweet to him. The boy thought to himself, a bitter-sweet taste rising to his mouth.

Miriam after some maneuvering, finally managed to get the boy to sit down a distance away from the door, and to wrap the blanket around himself.

Ultimately, she would of liked to get him out of his wet clothes, but at the very least she knew he wouldn't get hyperthermia, as it was not cold enough for that during month and season.

Miriam clearly knew the boy was probably scared and afraid. So she gave him a big hug.

Somewhat forgetting that it might seem a little weird to victorian standards. Luckily, she was only four years old. They couldn't call her improper for hugging someone. At least not in this point and time in her short second-life.

After finishing attending to the boy, Miriam turned around to see her father looking at her with a confused and stressed out look in his eyes.

Before she could be intero- questioned by her father, the servant named Kitty came into the room looking abit frazzled and frightened.

The left side of her face as a huge bruise on it, that looked like it had started to blacken already in color. Faint traces of a black eye under and slightly over her eyelid of her right eye.

Kittys left eye was lazy and didn't quite match pace with her right eyes movements.

She appeared to limp abit, Miriam just by looking at her could tell she had been badly beaten very recently, and perhaps periodically over a long period of time.

Her hair was a dingy brown, looking as if it hadn't been washed in a long time, and her skin looked as if it had a slight yellow tinge to it.

Miriam also noticed she was missing two fingers on her left hand, that looked like they had healed long ago. Most likely an industrial accident.

Her clothes were raggedy, and splattered with God knows what over a period of months or years.

"Excuse me, but why does their maid look like this? It looks as if a drunkard had come home to beat this poor girl every night, and locked her in a cellar whenever she wasn't working..." Miriam remarked, anger bubbling up within her small, frail, and dainty frame.

Upon seeing Kitty come out, Henry also had a look of horror on his face, cleary he had never seen Kitty this up close before either.

Nathanial paled a bit at Kittys appearence but cleared his throat the best he could and replied, "Kitty has a penchant for trying to steal Francine's things and Jeremy has on multiple occasions said that Kitty had raised a hand to him unjustly. So as the head male figure in the household most of the time, I had to uphold justice for my siblings. Although I never did more than to flog her a few times. The servant is known to be prone to bouts of clumsiness, and so perhaps she fell while cleaning or the something of the like."

"Father, I demand you question her about these accusations, surely if she did all these horrid sounding things they'd have fired her long ago." Miriam piped up, determining that this servant even if possibly capable of a few of these accusations, surely was incapable of all of them.

Mr.Stuart turning to look the servant named Kitty in the eyes, asked her point blank, "I'll sort that all out in a bit. Firstly, I must ask you some questions about this morning Ms.Kitty.

Who ordered Beatrice to not attend to her charge this morning?"

Kitty, seemingly on the verge of a panic attack, glanced all around the kitchen as if searching for some sort of way to not answer this discomforting question.

She had been told she'd be beaten again if she said even an utter of anything even slightly unfavorable about their eldest miss, Francine.

Gulping down the nervous spit that had begin to pool within her mouth, Kitty spoke up.

" M..m.mr St-tuart, Beatrice said she would go with Anetta and Francine this morning because it was the eldest daughters big day soon. She didnt want you, her master, to look cheap so she decided to follow Francine and Anetta around to add to their entourage and prestige."

Once Kitty had finished speaking, everyone but her knew what she spoke was utter bullsh*t.

Nathanial once again had a great sense of foreboding bubbling up inside the deepest reaches of his being.

Not able to withstand these baseless words, Miriam spoke out aloud "Kitty, Beatrice is my Nanny, nursemaid, personal maid. No matter what, normally she would be ready to go around with me to anywhere I deem it fun too.

She is actually payed for by my late mothers dowry, from when my mother married my father. My mother being of noble blood meant she had a hefty dowry. It was quite a sum from what I heard from Rosminda, who was my mothers personal lady in waiting. So your saying my nanny left me to go follow a girl she's never met before while being paid by my dead mothers former dowry? If that is indeed the case, she should be fired at once!"

Miriam made sure to sound very haughty in her speech, and to annunciate carefully the words about dowry, dead, and noble blood.

Kitty looked very confused upon hearing this news, as if the Kitty.exe application had stopped running.

Miriam looking to her father, gave him a prideful but also pained gaze with piercing blue eyes, before going over to Henry who was still clutching the second blanket in his lanky arms, and she promptly swiped it from his embrace.

Carefully unfurling the blanket, Miriam wrapped it around herself, and as if in perfect timing, a small sneeze escaped fron her little now slightly reddened nose.

"I hope I'm not getting sick..." Miriam said, as a little tear escaped her eyes to trickle down her face and slide off at her small jawbone.
