Chapter 42

Jim finished his shift and went home. He'd had spent much of the night showing Darren around the community and the outlying areas. Darren was the newest member of the detachment - a Cree from Saskatchewan. Staff hoped people would be more willing to trust a First Nations officer.

Darren wasn't so sure.

"A cop is a cop. Most of the people who don't talk to you won't talk me. They just won't talk to me in Cree instead of English."

Jim already liked him and planned to ask Leigh if she wanted to invite him for supper one night.

Jim put the truck in park then reached for his holster heart pounding. The door to their home swung in the wind. Leigh was very particular about shutting and locking the doors, even before the children invaded their home. He called dispatch and reported the problem.

"Back up is on its way," dispatch responded, "Wait."
