Chapter Twenty-Five

Private First Class Davidson drove the APC with active night vision. He was so used to the night vision he wouldn't drive civilian vehicles at night. He didn't feel safe unless the world lit up in green and black. Private Levesque used the infra-red. The night was cold, maybe minus ten, but that just made it easier to see heat traces, even old ones. Neither of them saw anything.

They ran on minimum electronics - just in case the enemy had some surveillance to detect their signal. It wasn't like they could get lost. There was only one road.

The trees were strange, like toothpicks with Christmas trees stuck on top. They cut off vision and yet allowed enemy movement. They couldn't see very far into the forest, not with their ground based infrared. Davidson would be happier with some air support, but choppers made too much noise. They'd have to do without.
