The Gap didn't look dangerous. A broad valley meandered through mountain peaks on either side. Flowers filled the fields lining the road with dying colour.
"Lots of people have tried to settle here." Dedrick waved at the fields. "It would be a profitable place for an inn, but there are too many bandits robbing caravans who go through the Gap." He walked out ahead of the caravan with Harald and Rodrigo. "I didn't have any women with me last time; I paid the toll they demanded and got on my way. I've heard of caravans who argued, or tried to sneak through and were slaughtered to the last man."
"They can't interfere with shipping too much," Harald shaded his eyes to look along the valley, "or the Emperor, or whoever he's put in charge here, would come in and clean it out. They haven't because it would cost more than they would save. I wonder how many rumours they started themselves."
