Rodrigo pointed out the glittering city in the distance as the caravan rolled down the hill. The lead driver laughed when Rodrigo had told the story of how the bandits became innkeepers. He didn't believe a word of it. Probably just as well. They didn't need any extra fame coming into Lusia.
"That place is one of the most corrupt cities in the world." Rodrigo shook his head. "The dirt-poor live cheek by jowl with the insanely rich. Everyone is playing a game and you never know when something will jump out of an alley and bite you."
"Sounds like you love it." Milene nudged him with her elbow.
"You'd think the Emperor's own city would be hard to work in, but in many ways, it's easy. Everyone expects treachery, so I play on that. It's like taking candy from a baby."
"Have you ever tried to take candy from a baby?" Milene laughed at him. "Not so easy."
"That's what keeps it interesting." Rodrigo shrugged and winced when she nudged him harder.
