The guard welcomed Marriette, Joan and Prenny without question. Not raising so much as an eyebrow at Marriette's dress or Joan's trousers and blouse. He led them to the parlour, where Marshal stood like a statue in the hall. He held up a hand. The guard nodded and left to return to his post.
"We're going to have to wait a while." Marriette said. "Let's see if we can't find my children."
"Nursery, last I heard." Marshal said.
Marriette led them through the maze of halls to the nursery. Prenny held onto Joan's hand so she wouldn't trip as she tried to see everything at once.
Nikay almost knocked Marriette over in his enthusiasm. Beatifa wasn't far behind.
"Prenny meet my children, Nikay, and Beatifa." Marriette put her hand on their heads as she named them."
"Lady Prenny," Nikay stood tall as he could and gave his most courtly bow. "I am most pleased to meet you."
Prenny went red as a beet.
"Didn't I do it right?" Nikay looked up at Marriette, his eyes welling up.
