Chapter 87: The Balance

Aimee spent every waking moment standing at the prow of the ship staring out at the ocean. The sailors teased her constantly. Milene worried about it but Rodrigo told her to worry if they stopped.

"il Ronak took me up to the crow's nest today." Aimee told them as she shovelled her supper into her mouth.

"Do you know how to swim?" Rodrigo asked.

Aimee tilted her head, spoon stopped halfway to her mouth.

"I don't know. Probably."

"Let's not find out by you falling overboard." Milene made a face at the food. The stew was heavily spiced and sweat beaded her forehead.

"Oh Mama," Aimee rolled her eyes.

"What happened to 'Mother' and 'Father'?" Rodrigo leaned back, his plate empty.

"It's so formal." Aimee scrunched up her nose. "Doesn't fit you two. 'Sides it makes me feel more like a real kid."

"You are a real kid." Milene put a hand on Aimee's arm. "However you came to us, you're our daughter."
