Chapter 98: Sabotage

Several soldiers came down from their places atop the walls. Along with the halberds, a few carried kite shields like Olorus and Hook. Others had spears or short swords. Most wore the blue of the City Watch. Only one wore the traditional red-trimmed, red-caped armor of the High Guard.

Captain Cimon Endrus was old enough to have been Leah's grandfather. His gray hair was wavy and thick, save for a shiny, bald patch on the height of his head. Leah had always thought the curled, bushy, white mustache on his upper lip made him look like a river otter.

Leah saw Endrus twitch a bit as she approached and realized he had just overridden the instinct to bow to her. Instead, he straightened his back and stood even straighter. Then he turned, blinking in surprise as if seeing a ghost, but he wasn't looking at her. He was looking at Hook. Hook was looking back at Endrus and grinning.

"Where has everyone gone?" Olorus blurted before Leah had the chance to ask for herself.
