Chapter 26

Merick was grinning as he stepped up. He shook his head slowly from side to side and rested both hands on his hips. "Are ye a farmer now? Nothing like a good pillory to help a man find a new direction for his sorry life."

Odo turned his back on Merick and continued tilling the soil, hoping he would leave.

"Yer comin' with us, Odo. Ye went too far this time."

Odo turned and looked up in confusion. "What say ye?"

"Ye killed Charcoal-Burner Larkin."

One of the men-at-arms, carrying shackles, strode towards Odo. The other stepped behind and grabbed him firmly by the shoulders.

"What yer talkin about, who was killed?"

"Ye killed poor Charcoal-Burner Larkin, pushed him into Falls Ende, ye did. What will his widow and wee ones do now? Lord Mellester should have taken your life when he had the chance."

"I did no such thing!" yelled Odo. "Why are ye doing this? Ye know I didn't do it!"

Merick laughed. "Lord Mellester will be the judge of that, as is his right."
