Chapter 33

A double column of armed knights mounted on destriers snaked down the road heading towards the manor. It was an impressive sight, accompanied by the jingling of spurs, the a clanking of shiny armour and the sound of hooves on the hard-packed road. The unmistakeable pennant of Sir Hyde Fortescue, Lord of Ridgley, flapped proudly by a standard bearer at the head of the column. But it was another flag that caught everyone's attention. Held proudly aloft, the distinguished Plantagenet pennant of King Henry II caused Sir Wystan's blood to run cold. Sir Hyde was here on His Majesty's business.
