Chapter 32

"Yer will come with us. Yer will slowly stand and walk after me out of the door. My friend will be behind ye. Do ye understand, Merick?"

The reeve swallowed. "I do."

"Come, then."

Sir Gweir stood, as did Merick and Sir Kay, and they shouldered their way out amidst curious stares. Again, the reeve was considering making a dash for it.

"I have men all over the village, Merick, and they have orders to kill you if you run."

Merick wiped his sweaty brow with a sleeve and nodded.

"Walk up to the manor," ordered Sir Gweir.

The three men set out and without another word spoken, headed towards the manor. Merick was actually relieved and needed no encouragement, as he knew that as soon as Sir Wystan saw what was happening, he'd be safe. They climbed up the carriageway and headed towards the hall, but then as Merick turned to enter, one of the knights grabbed his tunic and pulled him away and continued past. Merick was totally puzzled and becoming increasingly frightened.
