Chapter 37

Odo delayed releasing his cows and sheep from the byre this morning because Charlotte, his betrothed, had insisted the animals would trample the much sought-after St. George's mushrooms that had sprung up during the night. She was determined to harvest them as quickly as possible

Charlotte began picking the delicacies on the lower portion of the large field and systematically worked her way up towards the river and Falls Ende. She heard the voices of the free mason and his son as they began their journey down the track, but paid them no mind as she toiled to fill her basket so Odo could release the animals.

A panicked shout alerted her; something was amiss. She stood upright, looked into the gloom and began walking up towards the river so she could see more.
