Chapter 39

"Aye, milord, that we will."

"Keep yer mouths shut. If I hear ye've been talking about this, I'll hunt ye down and yer families."

Three heads nodded in supplicant agreement. The brothers felt it wasn't worth mentioning their family was already dead.

The knight looked each man in the eyes to reinforce his threat.

Everyone turned to the prisoner as she began struggling and making noise. It was obvious she wanted to speak.

The knight commander laughed. "Let's hear what she has to say. Remove the cloth."

The high-spirited coursers stomped their feet and pulled at their reins, unhappy to be standing motionless. The knights, expert horsemen, spoke soothingly and stroked their horse's necks as Charlotte's gag was removed and water given. She was frightened; she knew who the knight commander was and feared him.

"What say ye, woman?"

"Release me milord. I know who you are, Sir Wystan. I have done nothing -"

"Put it back," ordered the knight, interrupting her plea.
