Chapter 45

Sir Wystan had enjoyed another long night of insobriety and was feeling its miserable effects. He'd woken late and decided he would shake off the lethargy and ill-feeling with some solitary exertion. He walked into the yard between the stable and house, removed his tunic and stood bare chested wearing only his breeches. Directly in front of him was a large post. It was partially buried and stood as tall as a man. The post, or 'pell' was used to train swordsmen; here they could practice technique and stroke combinations for hours by repeatedly attacking or striking it.

The only weapon Sir Wystan held was a wooden practice sword. It weighed twice as much as a normal sword and its extra weight helped develop upper body strength and improve endurance. In comparison, a real sword would feel lighter, and certainly be advantageous in battle.

Before Sir Wystan could begin he was interrupted.

"Sorry ta bother ye, sire."
