Chapter 46

Charlotte heard yelling and commotion from outside, but the closed shutters kept her from seeing anything. She tried to open the door but it was locked. With her fists she hammered on it until her hands hurt, then the door suddenly opened and the man appeared.

"Why am I held captive here?" Charlotte yelled. "Release me, please!"

The man stepped forward, his face expressionless, and struck her across the face. It was a hard, savage blow and knocked her to the floor. Without saying a word, he retreated, closing and locking the door behind him.

She remained on the floor in the clothes given to her by Lady Constance, and wept. She didn't know how much time had passed or how long she'd lain there when the door opened again and the man reappeared. Without sparing her a second glance, he placed bread, cheese and water on the table and exited quietly.

Charlotte was famished, but she felt if she ate the food it would show her captors that she was weak. She left it untouched.
