Chapter 52

A knight wielding a sword on the battlefield is a terrifying force to behold. Trained in all aspects of close quarter combat and use of weapons, knights were formidable opponents, either on foot or mounted, and they were feared for good reason. But in the close confines of the byre, the surviving knight was disadvantaged and not in his natural fighting environment. Reeve Petrus was well aware of this and used it to his full convenience. Anticipating what the knight would do, Petrus tried to position himself so he could prevent the knight from escaping, while his staff moved in a blur as it poked and jabbed relentlessly in the poor light.

Petrus was forcing the knight backwards into the wooden rails of the stable, the longer reach of the staff proving to be a handful for the knight who could do little more than swipe ineffectually at it.
