Chapter 59

Odo, self-consciously rode down the column of men and stopped in front of Sir Dain and Reeve Petrus. "Hail, Sir Dain," Odo greeted the knight formally and dipped his head in respect. He turned to the reeve with equal seriousness, "Hail, Reeve Petrus."

The reeve's initial anger had dissolved into amusement and he fought hard not to smile.

"Bring ye a message?" asked Sir Dain.

Odo's eyes flicked to the reeve.

"Sire, Odo wants to ride with us. He feels he can assist us, and help with his woman."

The knight glowered at Odo. "I see ye are comfortable on a borrowed horse," his expression stern. He paused a heartbeat or two, then made up his mind. "Ye will remain at the rear, and not pass any rider in front. Understood?"

"Aye, sire," nodded Odo grinning from ear to ear.

"If ye fall from yer horse, which is very likely, we will not stop. Petrus, we need to press on."

Odo waited as the reeve headed out, and the column began to move.
