Chapter 88

Within a short time, the group was outside the manor house. A man-at-arms led the sergeants with their destriers to the stables and showed them where they could rest and sleep. The heavy door to the great hall was open and with Reeve Petrus and Sir Hugh leading the way, they entered.

Steward Alard was seated at his writing desk and stood to welcome everyone. Sir William spoke briefly to his fellow knights and with only Sir Hugh remaining, they left the hall to stand sentinel outside. The Templars trusted no one.

Odo introduced Steward Alard to the Templars and then, at Alard's invitation, they sat at a large table near the dais at rear of the hall.

"It may be a good time to see the pyxis," suggested Sir William without preamble.

Sir Hugh was seated beside him and nodded enthusiastically.
