Charlotte stared at Odo. She couldn't believe he spoke this way. His passion and belief was so profound and unselfish, it made her feel ashamed. She'd previously thought of Oswald's gift and what it meant to her and Odo in terms of a fat purse and a financial reward. But here in this hall, in front of all these men, he thought not of himself, but for others. She felt her eyes moisten as she proudly watched him.

Again the hall was deathly quiet.
