Chapter 111

Odo hadn't said a word, he couldn't. The amount of six hundred pounds wasn't a lot of coin, it was an inconceivable amount. He looked at the ground at his feet and shook his head in disbelief.

Preceptor Lucius re-entered the room followed by his guards. He was grinning. "I only wish Sir William could see yer face."

"Did Oswald know? Did he know this would happen and did he know the value of the pyxis?" Odo asked.

"I knew him briefly, I was young at the time. But he was well thought of and respected as a good, honest and pious man." Preceptor Lucius looked into the distance and took a deep breath. "And quite a reputation..."

Odo was staring at the preceptor.

"I think he did know, or would have known. He could have given the pyxis to the order at any time. Instead he chose to wait. He wanted it to be yers, of that I have no doubt."

"I feel unworthy of this gift, Preceptor."
