Odo felt the gaze of everyone on him. He felt uncomfortable. He recalled the preceptor's advice and warning, and said nothing. Reticence filled the room.

"I will see yer loan repaid," offered Sir Hyde, breaking the awkward silence.

"Nay milord, it was a gift."

The lord shook his head. "And I hear ye have gifted yer land to grow food for villagers."

Odo nodded. "Some, milord."

Jagger listened intently. This was the most peculiar conversation he'd ever heard between a powerful lord and a herdsman.

Sir Hyde shifted in his chair. The movement caused him to flinch. With his hand he grasped the stump hidden beneath the blanket as he tried to reposition. Charlotte wanted to go over and help. She didn't and could only observe.
