Chapter 127

"In the war against the Welsh," began Jagger, "a man-at-arms was struck by an arrow shot at him by a Welshman from a bow just like this." He held the bow in a meaty paw and waved it around to emphasize his point. "It went clean through the iron chausses10 that protected his thigh, entered his leg and then through the skirt of his leather tunic. It then penetrated the seat of the saddle and lodged into his horse, driving so deep that it killed the animal."

Both Huntsman Seth and Odo looked incredulous. "Nay, ye jest," scoffed Seth.

The three of them stood on the other side of the River Eks, well away from Falls Ende at the fringes of the forest. Earlier Odo explained how he'd received the gift from a remorseful outlaw before he died in the pillory. Jagger marvelled at the finely crafted bow and explained how his father also owned a Welsh long-bow such as this and he had learned how to shoot, but lacked the patience in training to improve his accuracy. "Takes years," he explained.
