All heads faced forward and looked out over the bow of the Frisian cog towards the smudge of a distant sail that appeared over the horizon some moments before. There were many other ships on the ocean, mostly coastal traders, plying backwards and forwards and loaded with valuable goods and merchandise. A collision at sea was always a possibility and it was prudent for these ships to sail clear and avoid each other.

For Hilke, he wanted to know in which direction the ship was headed so he could steer clear of them. However, another yell from the sharp eyed lookout created some concern. The distant ship had altered course and appeared to be heading towards them.
