Chapter 140

Directly behind Sir Hyde walked Steward Baldric and two men-at-arms, and at his side, holding on to his only hand walked Amy, Steward Baldric's daughter. The two had a special bond, and he loved her like the daughter he never had. Her tiny perfect hand completely enveloped by his heavily scarred and calloused paw seemed incongruous, yet to the lord, she provided balance in a world that was brutal and savage, where the weak, through no fault of their own, often struggled to survive. Amy represented his conscience; she made him aware of things, flowers, animals, and nature - beauty and goodness where previously he saw none. She marvelled with childish glee at things he'd long ago dismissed and deemed insignificant or unimportant. He was envious of her naivety because she saw nothing but virtue in the world, much like Odo and Charlotte did.
