Chapter 141

Instructions were given to replenish water and food for the horses. They wouldn't stay long, informed Hilke, the tide would turn soon and he wanted to follow it out. Leaving Wim in charge, Hilke walked along the dock and disappeared amongst the buildings.

Standing on dry land felt peculiar, commented Charlotte as they waited for Hilke to return. They stood on the pier stretching their legs; Jagger never more than a step or two away from them. He was vigilant and for anyone with hostile intentions, he was menacing. He told Odo that it would be better if he did not wear armour, for doing so, he said, would risk intimidating farmers. Odo and Charlotte were so used to seeing him wearing chainmail and without it he looked so different.

It was some time before Odo saw Hilke walking towards them with two men who looked identical to each other. Each man had an enormous stomach and an even larger thick bushy beard that grew in every possible direction, hiding their mouths.
