Chapter 143

Odo was grinning. "I have never seen animals like this."

Hilke returned from greeting everyone and walked up to Odo.

"How soon can we go to the local manor and speak to the lord about buying cows?" Odo asked excitedly.

Hilke shook his head. "Here there are no manors or lords, each farmer or ploegg, a landowner, is his own man and is responsible only to himself. If he is bad or done wrong, then he must come before a redjeven." Hilke could see Odo was confused. "A redjeven is chosen by many ploegg, to keep order and ensure freedom."

"Then do I need to speak with this redjeven?" Odo asked.

Hilke shook his head, "Nay, the redjeven has no business with a ploegg if no laws are broken by him or ye. The ploegg, or landowner is free to do as he pleases."

"It seems so simple," Charlotte added.

Jagger nodded. "I have heard of this but thought it fanciful talk."
