Chapter 144

It was dusk when he rode up to large house owned by the prosperous merchant and friend of Bishop Laninga in the town of Schiffdorf, about five miles from Geestendorf. A young servant girl answered the door and he politely introduced himself and asked to speak with Antonius Richter. She looked uncertain and nervous and seemed reluctant to disturb her master. He showed her one of the scrolls with Bishop Laninga's seal. She dipped her head in subservience and said something unintelligible that he thought meant wait, and shut the door. It seemed like an eternity before the door was thrust open and a tall thin man filled the space. He didn't appear thrilled at being roused.

"Ja?" questioned the man. His eyes narrowed in suspicion at the dark complexioned stranger.

Bishop Laninga assured him that Antonius Richter was fortunately fluent in English. "Please excuse the intrusion, I am Sir Kasos, and ye are Mynhear21 Richter?"
