Chapter 148

Sunrise saw a group of people gathered on the dock beside Hilke's koggership. No one had slept much since the incident during the night and Jagger was again questioning Odo and Charlotte about the stranger who'd come to Haro's field. "I am vexed that this man spoke English and wasn't a Frisian." He shook his head and looked to Cathal for any advice. "Why would an Englishman be here and be after Odo's cows?"

"Nothing would surprise me, it could even be Bishop Immers who is behind this, he is the only one with reason," said the Irishman.

"Are ye sure he was English, Odo?" asked Benedict.

"Nay, I never saw him well, but he was tall and while he spoke English, I saw nothing of his features as he kept his face hidden. I can only tell ye that much."

Jagger turned to Charlotte.

She shrugged. "Odo was closer to him than I; all I saw was his outline and then the flash of a sword."

"And now a man is dead," Odo said despondently.
