Chapter 147

It was quite dark with only a waning crescent moon overhead. Stars twinkled boldly, high above them like a canopy of suspended flickering candles in a near cloudless sky. Odo sat, leaning against a wooden gate with a blanket draped over his shoulders and Charlotte leaned against him, she also had a thick blanket covering her to ward off the chill and damp. Periodically they would walk the perimeter of the small field and then return to the gate where they talked quietly.

Odo knew Jagger was out there somewhere watching over them both, even after Odo insisted he remain on the boat. Jagger just shook his massive head defiantly and said nothing. The giant was completely selfless with his loyalty and dedication and Odo and Charlotte commented on this frequently. Unbidden, Cathal brought the subject up on more than one occasion and claimed Jagger was drawn to him like a moth to a flame, and nothing, no power on this earth, could prevent or stop it or him.
