Chapter 157

The tonsured clerk sat benignly in front of Bishop Laninga with ink-stained fingers delicately clasped together. His pale and pasty coloured skin a clear indication of his profession as a scholar and little time spent outdoors. Before him were a pile of thickly-bound books and scrolls, all reference materials he used to complete the unusual task given to him by the bishop. He sat with the confidence and self-assuredness, his lipless smile, condescending if not mocking to those unfamiliar with his quirks, for those who knew him accepted his oddities and peculiarities in favour of his sharp and agile mind.

The bishop changed position in his chair, his fingers steepled as if in prayer, pressed against his chin as he contemplated the exhortation given to him by the scholar.

The clerk inclined his head, a silent reminder he waited, if not impatiently for a response.
