Chapter 31

The next morning they woke up very early. The great cathedral was still immersed in shadow, and almost everyone was asleep.

Jeanne heated their water in the pitcher she had filled the night before and offered them coffee (the instant kind, not as strong as the one Sophie had been drinking with Amanda and Lukas centuries ago, but with a definitely more intense flavour than the beverages she was used to) and homemade cookies, very hard and sweet.

”Jeanne,” Sophie asked, “Do you know where I could find some men's clothes? I would try to... um, not to attract attention,” she added, seeing Jeanne’s perplexed expression.

”I’ll ask around,” Jeanne replied, obviously not entirely convinced.
