Chapter 32

In a single instant, the infected grabbed her leg. His scaly hands were pale and thin, but Emma, apparently, was unable to shake him off. Sophie saw her hitting him on the hands, the face, the legs. She watched the scene frozen, wide-eyed.

He’s infecting her, was all she could think. She’s been infected.

”Sophie!” Emma shouted.

The words rang empty in her head. Her instinct told her to run away, but she could not move.

“Help! Sophie!” Emma repeated.

Something snapped in her mind: without knowing what she was doing, Sophie ran towards the infected and kicked him with all her strength, hitting him in the shoulder.

The creature fell back to the ground, muttering something incoherently.

”Let’s go,” she told Emma. “Up, come on!“

She helped the old lady up and pulled her along, down the tunnel and as far as possible from the infected.
