Shortly after the false fire alarm, Erik was summoned to see Murray, who paid him compliments for his work and announced that from now on his duties would change, becoming ‘operational’.

In practice, Erik found, it meant that he no longer had to do surveillance shifts and spend hours staring at the monitor. Instead, he would handle more delicate tasks, such as guarding the most troublesome prisoners and backing up the police officers who came to the medical prison for interrogation.

“Just so I know, will I get a pay rise for this?“ Erik asked cautiously.
