His timing wasn't the greatest, but Andre finally got back to me.
I helped Dad clear a path to the hall. Okay, let's face it, I did the work and he pined over his lost experiment. I had to stop and clutch at my head when Andre got through, which was unfortunate, since I was holding a big chunk of ceiling at the time. At least there wasn't anyone underneath it.

"What's wrong?" At least Dad started noticing things around him again.
"The others are coming back." I hefted the piece of concrete and set it aside. "I reached Andre."
He fell silent, retreating inside himself to mourn, I supposed. I wondered if he even heard me.
