Abigail hugged me, crying into my chest, when the general showed up. I ignored the activity around me, just wanting to hold her, amazed and grateful she was okay.
Andre sat there and watched us with a smile on his face, looking tired but very content. When Abigail turned to face him, she reached out and cupped his cheeks in her hands, emotion overtaking her as she kissed him.
"Thank you." She sank back against me.
"You're welcome," Andre said.
"How?" I still didn't get it.
He shrugged and looked away, not at anything specific, eyes lost.
"I just knew," he said. "There was something inside her that didn't want to let go, calling out to me." He raised his hands then dropped them in his lap again. "And to you, too, my friend." He sagged to one side, shaking his head. "Man, I'm beat."
Wanting to spare Abigail the approaching general, I left her with Andre and rose to greet him.
"Good job," he said.
"I've learned some things," I said. "About my mother."
