Chapter 40: Repository

I could have gone home, retreated to Chaos to talk to Seth and maybe spend the next several hours-or days-wondering what happened while doing the safe and smart thing. The responsible realm ruler thing. After all, maybe I had done damage to Undertown without knowing it. I was Chaos, wasn't I? The bringer of trouble and the maker of messes.

But the mist within didn't react until we felt something happen, until the attack started. It was a reactionary response, not an instigation. And so, with my brow tight and a small headache starting behind my eyes, I exited the skull door and waited for it to close.

The giant, pale being that guarded Dad's door didn't seem angry with me, but it was defiantly rattled, the jaw hanging slightly askew, its giant presence off kilter. I set one hand on it, helped it steady itself and it answered with a soft clacking of its teeth before straightening itself out again.

"I'll find out what happened," I told it.
