That was bad, of course. My stunned brain shook off the instant of I told you so. Mafdel hadn't even had to speak out loud as the small monster sat up, shaking, face leaking bloody tears.

"I don't know how," she wailed. "But Cadence is gone, too."

"No, I'm not." My teen sister of Life emerged from behind the throne herself, hands wringing on the front of her sundress, distress on her lovely face. "I went looking for Delilah."

"I turned my back for one moment." Ghola shook, hands covering her face with trembling fingers. "She was thirsty."

I stood, heart pounding but forcing calm despite the mist and Chaos and the desperate worry in my heart. We'd found Delilah in Egypt last time, and it ended well. So panic wasn't going to help right now. Though I had to admit to myself, there was only one explanation behind Delilah's ability to vanish on short notice. "She can cross the threshold of the realms," I said out loud in a calm, level voice.
