Chapter 108

INT. - 10th STREET ANIMAL RESCUE - EVENING

The hallway was dark, quiet, though animals stirred behind the door to her left, leading to the cages where the strays and drop offs were housed. They sounded as though they'd been woken, though there were only a few yipping barks here and there, not the full-throated cacophony of a disturbance.

Either they knew well who was with them or they were being kept quiet somehow. Food, maybe? Gerri glanced to her right, into the front lobby of the shelter, unsurprised to find it empty. Another quick look over her shoulder showed Ray and Kinsey at the door, staying out of her way. She exhaled quickly in relief before reaching for the pull to the main shelter.

Light flickered on, beaming out from under the door. Proof enough someone was here. All of her nerves fled at last, her training and the innate instinct she carried washing away her stress and pulling her, as always in situations like this, into perfect calm with a hint of excitement.
