Chapter 102: Where the Chips Fell

Juan walked onto the flight deck and watched as the collection of battered fighters limped their way in. He had no idea which bird Julie was flying, and with each pilot emerging from their craft that was not her, the pit in his gut grew harder.

What the hell was I thinking? He thought as fear took a firm grip. How could I have been so stupid? I should have told her the truth.

A minute later two fighters came into view. As they lined up for a landing one was using its shields on the nose to nudge the other fighter in. A move very few pilots were ever able to do, but one Julie had perfected. For a brief moment, a smile flashed on Juan's face as he knew she was okay. Keeping his spot, he watched as she landed, popped the canopy and stepped out. She didn't see him at first. Her first concern was to get the hot helmet and gloves off. A cool shower was foremost on her mind.
